A scribing block is a tool with a strut fixed vertically on a pedestal and a scriber attached that is used to draw lines parallel to an object, and to position holes, etc. It is also called a surface gauge. It is used by sliding a scriber vertically and laterally to adjust the desired height and angle. Since it is mainly used for marking steel materials in machine work, scribers are often made of tool steel such as high-speed steel. To draw lines on or mark steel, the scriber must be harder and stronger than the target steel. Therefore, the tip of the scriber is hardened and a carbide tip is attached to increase the hardness and abrasion-resistance. In addition, many scribers have one side bent at 90° to facilitate centering work to determine the center position.
