More details here.
Bevel gears, or conical gears, are transmission gears with a cone shape like an umbrella. Bevel gears are used for transmitting force between 2 non parallel axes. The angle between the 2 axes is normally 90 degrees. Bevel gears must only be used with other bevel gears, not together with another gear type, unlike spur gear. The tooth of bevel gears has 2 types, straight bevel gear, and spiral bevel gear. Straight bevel gears are simple to shape and have straight teeth, suited for a mechanism that has a pitch speed of not more than 5 m/sec. Allowable pitch speed may increase up to 50 m/sec if the tooth surface has been processed. While a spiral bevel gear is a bevel gear that has helical teeth. Spiral bevel gear provides smoother motion compared with straight bevel gears. Spiral bevel gears are well suited for heavy-duty applications and can be designed for high-speed machines. Also, spiral bevel gears also provide lower noise than straight types.
